Beethoven: Overture to "Egmont" (Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra)
(English) The subject of the work is the story and heroic deeds of Count Lamoral of Egmont. This painting is his portrait. In his work, Beethoven expresses his political concerns. He was interested in the self-sacrifice and heroic exaltation of a man condemned to death for his strong criticism of oppression. Enjoy the music of his intense euphoria for a moment. When I was a music student, I could only conduct this piece. It is lovely to see both Carlos Kleiber and Karajan on YouTube again.
Beethoven: Overture to "Egmont" (Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra)
In 1787, Goethe's play of the same name was composed.
Beethoven composed this overture to the play in 1809.
Today, only this overture is featured in the concert.
Egmont was a real person from 16th century Holland.
He stood up to save his people from oppression and finally died of decapitation.
His powerful way of life seems to be reflected in this overture.
At first, the overture begins with a dark and heavy tone.
However, as in the Fifth Symphony "Destiny" and the Ninth Symphony "with Chorus," it ends on a high note of joy (victory).
If you listen to Beethoven's "Egmont" Overture well, you will find it very attractive, and the deep orchestral sound is pleasant.
There is something majestic about it.
The performance by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Karajan is also excellent.
Critics of classical music do not seem to have a good impression of Karajan.
However, I appreciate that he made classical music accessible and contributed to the popularization of CDs.
Sony and Karajan decided to put Beethoven's 9th Symphony on a single CD.
That seems to have helped Karajan popularize the CD.
It's because it was not possible to make it into a single CD with analog records.
Karajan does not seem to have great musicality like Carlos Kleiber or Solti(Wow).
However, it is beautiful that he drove the orchestra and created acoustic beauty and spatiality with his outstanding leadership and perfect conducting technique.
