[France: Rosary Chapel] The culmination of Henri Matisse

(English) Let's take a look at my favourite Matisse Chapel today. The Rosary Chapel in Vence, France, designed by renowned French painter Henri Matisse, is the culmination of his life's work. Matisse's simple drawing style and mastery of lines and colours make his art accessible. The chapel, built as a gesture of gratitude to the nurses who cared for him, features a peaceful interior with blue, yellow, and green stained glass and murals, creating a calming atmosphere reflective of Matisse's artistic world.

[France: Rosary Chapel] The culmination of Henri Matisse

1)

The Chapel of the Rosary is a small church in Vence, France. It is about a 30-minute drive from Nice.

This little church is so famous because it was designed by the French painter Henri Matisse.

The Rosary Chapel and Henri Matisse

A) Who is Henri Matisse?

Henri Matisse was a French painter who excelled in the simple drawing of lines and colours, and in later years, he also mastered the paper-cutting technique.

Henri Matisse's works are easy to understand, even for people like me who are not familiar with paintings. That's because even if you can't see the complex brush strokes and use of colour, his painting style conveys the quality of the design.

I want to share the words of Henri Matisse that I found in the church earlier because I thought it explained why the goodness of the painting was conveyed to all people.

"I draw many preparatory. I draw my subject again and again until really feel it inside of me."

3)

This means that when Henri Matisse painted something, he carefully prepared himself to capture its essence. He would then begin to paint the subject after identifying its roots, the parts of the issue stripped of all branches and leaves.

Knowing this, even the untrained eye can somewhat understand why his paintings are so pleasing. Because even in everyday life, when people tell you something you don't know, they want you to talk about it as simply as possible. I think Henri Matisse does that with his paintings.

In general, we hear that painters start with drawings (sketches). But all we see are finished paintings after that training. I think Henri Matisse is a good painter for the layman because he went through that and created works in which he mastered the line again.

B) Rosary Chapel

Henri Matisse designed the chapel over four years. Completed three years before his death, he considered it the culmination of his life's work.

It is free because the sisters here were the nurses who looked after him when he was seriously ill. The Sister was in charge of rebuilding the church, which had been burnt down in an air raid during the Second World War, and she consulted Henri Matisse's studio. Their meeting at this time was a coincidence, and fate was strange!

5)

C) Henri Matisse's work corner

The interior is roughly divided into the Henri Matisse Study and the Chapel of the Work. First, walk through his works.

White walls, marble floor. His works are lined up. The result is strange: although he uses only a countable number of lines, it is possible to replay the scene in the painting in the brain. This is because he uses lines to represent the space without lines.

The emotions of the people, the texture of the things, and the atmosphere of the place. It was interesting to know that these things could be summed up in a simple line.

Somehow I felt like I could draw it myself, but it was impossible.

6)

D) Chapel area

Unfortunately, photography was not allowed inside the chapel. So I will quote from the official HP.

Inside was this blue, yellow and green stained glass and a mural. It was a very peaceful atmosphere. The room has only limited patterns, so it is very calming. I idly looked at the pictures and stained glass on the walls and imagined their meanings.

Speaking of stained glass, it's colourful, red and so on.

In contrast, the Chagall stained glass I saw in Nice was also based on blue, but red was added as a complementary colour to his work.

In Matisse's work, the three colours and the plants' contours create a quiet atmosphere, even in the photo.

This was the world of Henri Matisse.

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) a French master of the 20th century. After being a central figure in Fauvism, which had a significant impact on art history with its intense colours, he worked as an innovator in painting until his death at the age of 84. He dedicated himself to the search for beautiful colours and forms. His work still fascinates us today and continues influencing later generations of artists.

This exhibition, which is being held in full cooperation with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which houses the most extensive Matisse collection in the world, is the first major retrospective in Japan in almost 20 years. In addition to paintings, the exhibition presents representative works from each period, including sculptures, drawings, prints, cut-outs and materials related to the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, southern France, considered the greatest masterpiece of his later years. The exhibition follows the master's sculptural adventures, full of light and colour.

Highlights

1. For the first time in almost 20 years! A major retrospective of Henri Matisse, the master of 20th-century art.

2. Some 150 masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which has the most extensive Matisse collection in the world.

3. The dawn of "Fauvism", Matisse's early masterpiece "Luxury, Silence, Eccentricity" Japan premiere
