劇場の中で、この作品名を呼ぶのは縁起が悪いとされていて、ただ「The Scottish Play」と呼ぶ習慣があるのだそうです。この作品が呪われた不運な作品であるという話は、大半は事実ではないのですが、そう思われても仕方がない例もいくつかあります。1606年に初めて上演された時、Hal Berridgeという少年がマクベス夫人を演じたのですが、高熱のために亡くなってしまったそうです。また、この作品は、リンカーン大統領のお気に入りの作品だったそうで、大統領は、自分が暗殺される数日前に、ポトマックへの航海に、この作品を同行させたそうです。1942年にJohn Gielgud主演でこの作品が上演されていた時には、3人の俳優が亡くなり、衣装係の1人が自殺を図ったそうです。今日は襟を正して楽しみましょう。(English) In the theatre, it is considered bad luck to call the production by its name, and the custom is to call it 'The Scottish Play.' Most stories about the show being cursed and unlucky are untrue, but there are a few instances where it might be thought so. When it was first performed in 1606, a boy named Hal Berridge played Lady Macbeth, but he died of a high fever. The play was also a favorite of President Lincoln, who accompanied it on his voyage to the Potomac a few days before he was assassinated. When the production was staged in 1942, starring John Gielgud, three actors died, and one of the wardrobe mistresses attempted suicide. Now, let us get our posture right and have some fun.

Macbeth, a Scottish general, is given the title of Lord of Cawdor by King Duncan for his war service.

However, he is told of a prophecy by three witches he meets in the wilderness.

'Hail, Macbeth, you will one day be king.'

Lady Macbeth then rebukes Macbeth.


Macbeth: "My thought, whose murder

Yet is but fantastical,

Shakes so my single state of man, that function

Is surmise and nothing is

But what is not."


Lady Macbeth: "Yet do I fear thy nature,

It is too full o'th 'milk of human kindness

To catch the nearest way.

Hie thee hither.

That I may pour my spirits in thine ear,"


Lady Macbeth: "I have given suck, and know

How tender 'ts to love the babe that milks me;

I would, while it was smiling in my face,

Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums

And dashed the brains out, had I so sworn

as you have done, do this."

Finally, he plans and assassinates King Duncan.

The two princes fled the country, fearing for their safety.

Macbeth then ascends to the throne.


Macbeth: 'Methought I heard a voice cry

'Sleep no more.

Macbeth does murder sleep,"

Macbeth: "Who can be wise,

Amazed, temperate, and furious,

Loyal and neutral, in a moment?"

However, the witches prophesied Banquo, a warrior, to "produce a king, though he will not be king."

Macbeth felt uneasy about Banquo and assassinated him.

Later, Macbeth had a vision of Banquo, whom he had killed.

Macbeth again asked the three witches for three prophecies.

'Beware of Macduff.

'Nothing born of a woman can defeat Macbeth.'

'If the forests of Birnam do not invade the hills of Dunsinane, you shall not be defeated.'


Apparition: "Macbeth, Macbeth, Macbeth,

Macbeth Had I three ears, I'd hear thee.

Be bloody, bold, and resolute.

Laugh to scorn

The power of man.

For none of woman born shall harm Macbeth".

The noble Macduff went into exile in England.

Macbeth then attacked his castle and killed Macduff's wife and children.

In England, Macduff planned to kill Macbeth with Prince Markham, son of King Duncan.

Macbeth's allies betrayed him one by one.

Lady Macbeth became mentally ill and died.


Lady Macbeth: "Here's the smell of the blood still.

All the perfumes of Arabia

will not sweeten this little hand.

Oh, oh, oh."


Macbeth: "I have lived long enough; my way of life

Is fallen into the sear, the yellow leaf

And that which should accompany old age,"


Macbeth: "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow,

Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,

To the last syllable of recorded time,

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools

The way to dusty death.

Out, out, brief candle,

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,

And then is heard no more.

It is a tale told by an idiot,

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,

Signifying nothing."

The English army attacked Dunsinane Castle, where Macbeth was.

They made it look like Burnham Forest was coming towards them.

Finally, Macduff confronted Macbeth.

Macduff said that he had come out of his mother's belly (by cesarean section).

He took Macbeth's head.

Prince Markham, son of King Duncan, who Macbeth killed, was crowned the new king.
