A forbidden love that began during Schumann's hospitalization
I watched a movie about Geliebte Clara a long time ago. She was the wife of the great composer Schumann, himself a famous pianist. They had a fateful encounter with the young Brahms, and even after Schumann's death, the friendship between Clara and Brahms continued. Here is my perspective on this story.
Geliebte Clara
A forbidden love that began during Schumann's hospitalization
1)
Brahms and Clara are more sweet and painful than Schumann and Clara.
Schumann and Clara were also dramatic and romantic enough, but they were married and had children.
Clara was the daughter of Schumann's piano teacher. At that time, Schumann was 19, and Clara was 9.
When Schumann was 27 and Clara was 17, her father opposed getting married, but Schumann filed a trial and got married.
But Brahms and Clara, at least ostensibly, have a relationship between their teacher's wife and his disciples.
Moreover, Clara is a world-famous pianist and Brahms' more 14-year-old woman.
Brahms is a composer and single man who will lead the next generation.
It is a combination that makes posterity so excited that it inflates various imaginations.
2)
Brahms and Clara met in 1853.
It was when the still unknown 20-year-old Brahms visited Schumann's house.
He was astonished by Brahms' talent, and Clara also accepted him.
It wasn't until 1854 that Schumann committed suicide by jumping and entering Endenich's mental hospital.
Schumann made his first suicide attempt at 22 in the wake of his older sister's death.
Since then, he has been suffering from depression and insomnia.
Upon hearing the news, Brahms immediately rushed to Clara.
He helped manage the household account book, take care of children, and do household chores, supporting Clara like his family.
3)
And it wasn't just a temporary one; it lasted for about two years before Schumann died in 1856.
Schumann entered a mental hospital and repeatedly attempted suicide.
Brahms was immediately fascinated by Clara.
In a letter to her friend in June 1854, he stated, "I often have to stop touching my arm against her shoulder."
Whether it was a continuation of the letter to the friend or later Brahms's letter to Clara, there is no doubt that Brahms loved Clara.
He sometimes writes, "I love Clara. I love you very much."
The pre-1858 letter that Clara wrote to Brahms has been destroyed.
However, the people around him were aware of the relationship between the two.
And at the beginning, of course, there were criticisms.
4)
Clara is a well-known pianist whose husband, Schumann, is in a mental hospital.
And Brahms, 14 years younger than her, is a student of her husband.
It can't help that her friends say a lot about the combination.
Schumann, who was in the hospital, has noticed the relationship between the two through letters from Brahms and Clara and stories of visiting friends.
Schumann would have felt that the young and talented Brahms was robbing his beloved wife.
There is also a theory that this worsened Schumann's mental state.
Schumann died in July 1856.
Clara was then to take her two sons on a summer vacation in Switzerland.
5)
In doing so, she invites Brahms and his sister, who spend about a month together.
There is no record of what kind of story was exchanged between the two.
But perhaps they talked about what to do in the future. And the answer given was farewell.
Brahms seemed to think that while Schumann was alive, he could never marry her no matter how much he loved Clara.
But with Schumann's death, there was nothing to hold back her feelings for Clara.
Their friends already suspect the relationship between Clara and Brahms.
If they were to be together like this, he could hurt the perfect woman named Clara.
Brahms, who was initially earnest and naive, thought so.
And he may have decided to part with Clara.
After Schumann's death, he began to distance himself from Clara.
6)
Brahms fell in love with Agate and got engaged.
However, the engagement was abandoned two years later, around 1858.
However, when one love is over, Brahms returns to Clara again.
He returned to and from Clara's home more often and was intimate with her children.
After that, Brahms had several times in love with other women.
But every time Clara felt lonely, she couldn't tell him.
Brahms didn't get to know deeply any women other than Clara.
As a result, he repeatedly returned to Clara.
